Susan has called North Carolina home for the past 35 years and is a proud, die-hard Tar Heel fan. She and her husband raised three children and are now enjoying life with six grandchildren. Throughout every season of life, volunteering has remained a constant. Whether serving in her children’s schools, supporting local nonprofit organizations, or giving back through her church, Susan has always found ways to help others.

After years of raising her family and serving her community, Susan recently completed her undergraduate degree. She’ll soon begin pursuing a master’s degree in nonprofit management—a perfect fit for someone with such a heart for service.

Susan first learned about SECU Family House through her church when she joined a group preparing dinner for our guests. After seeing our mission firsthand, she wanted to become more involved. She soon became one of our dedicated laundry volunteers and has also generously served on event committees, including helping with our annual Golf Tournament.

When asked what she enjoys most about folding laundry, Susan shared:

“I love folding laundry. It’s my quiet time where I can talk to guests and find out about what they are going through.”

It’s a beautiful reminder that even the simplest tasks can become meaningful opportunities to connect with the families we serve.

When asked why others should volunteer at SECU Family House, Susan didn’t hesitate:

“It’s a family. Volunteers are a family, guests become family—it truly is a Family House.”

Susan’s compassionate spirit, quiet presence, and willingness to serve wherever she’s needed embody what makes our volunteer community so special. Whether she’s folding towels, lending a hand at a special event, or simply taking the time to listen to a guest, Susan reminds us that kindness often shows up in the quietest moments.
