Recent guest Dexter Headen has been through a lot. While recovering from congestive heart failure two years ago, he underwent surgery to have a heart pump implanted to help his heart circulate blood throughout his body. Just as he was nearing a full recovery, he was diagnosed with throat and mouth cancer at UNC Hospitals last year.

A native of Siler City, North Carolina, Dexter has been staying at SECU Family House for several weeks while receiving radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Despite the challenges he has faced, he has approached this latest chapter with remarkable positivity and grace.

“Everything is great. I have no complaints. I recommend everybody come and stay here. It’s quiet, neat, and the people are very friendly. It’s like a support system because you meet people who are going through what you’re going through.”

Later this summer, Dexter will meet with his UNC transplant team as he continues his treatment. We are honored to support him during this chapter of his journey.
