Volunteer Spotlight- Kara Huang

Kara Huang began volunteering at SECU Family House alongside her entire family, spending Saturday mornings folding laundry with her brother, mom, and dad. As this middle schooler became more involved, she noticed that linens were sometimes folded and organized differently depending on the day—not because anyone was doing it wrong, but because volunteers were doing their best with different guidance on how to fold the linens.

When Kara’s Girl Scout troop began working on Silver Award projects, she saw the opportunity to help make volunteering with the linens more consistent. She created a Linens Volunteer Guide to provide clear, shared instructions for volunteers, compiling written steps, photos, and videos into a handbook that can be updated and used well into the future. Now, when folders come to Family House, they can refer to the guide on how to fold the linens properly and consistently.

We are so grateful to Kara for her thoughtfulness and initiative for our volunteers and guests. The guide has been a ‘game changer’ for our volunteers! And to think this was done by an 8th grader. We are happy to report that on January 21, 2026, Kara earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can receive.
