Guests Spotlight - Larry and Jean Mellen

On September 11, 2001, Larry was working for the New York city transit system at a site 1-1/2 miles from the World Trade Center when the explosions happened.  After experiencing numerous health issues and undergoing several tests, he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a rare lung disease that causes the growth of scar tissue inside the lungs – a result of contaminant dust from the New York site.

In 2015, Larry and Jean, his wife of 51 years, decided to move to Waxhaw, North Carolina, about a three-hour drive from Chapel Hill.  In 2017, Larry underwent a successful lung transplant at UNC Hospitals, thanks to Dr. Jason Lobo and his esteemed pulmonary team.

Larry and Jean have been staying at our hospitality house on/off for the past 10 years post-transplant for what Larry calls “tune ups.” Over the years we’ve gotten to know this close and loving couple, oftentimes having early morning chats with them in the kitchen.  The conversations are always fun and engaging.

Asked what staying at Family House has meant to them, Larry shared “This is the greatest place to come to support people. You ask for something and it’s done. The rooms are always clean and beautiful.” Jean shared “It’s a very nurturing and supportive environment.  You interact with other guests and form bonds.”

While Jean has also had some health issues of her own over the years, that has not stopped her and Larry from regularly donating much needed Wish List items from Costco.  We are so grateful for their kindness and generosity.

It’s evident that Larry is a fighter and with Jean by his side, we know he has a lot more living to do. We wish them all of life’s best and continued good reports as we look forward to our next chats with them.
